Take a break from the temples and visit a local floating village. This private tour brings you to Kampong Kleang, the largest floating village in Siem Reap province which is home to more than 10,000 people, many of whom have been living there for generations. We’ll tour the village, its school, and meet some local families and learn how the community members make a living and the issues they face. Set sail onboard a long-tail boat navigating the Tonle Sap river to visit an ethnic Khmer-Vietnamese floating village and watch the sunset on the lake.
What to Expect
You’ll be picked up at your Siem Reap hotel at 7:30am (morning option) or 2pm (afternoon option) and we’ll head to Kampong Kleang. En-route, we’ll stop and break for 15 minutes at a local village to try out the famous Cambodia sticky rice and other local snacks. Upon arriving at Kampong Kleang, you will visit the community and get the chance to interact with the local residents. We’ll then board a boat to head out to the floating houses which is relocated further out into the Tonle Sap lake when the water is low (during January/February to June). The guide will explain the significance of the Tonle Sap lake to the community and how the changing season impacts the livelihoods of the villagers. The economy is dominated by fishing and due to seasonal flooding all homes either buoyed or on stilts (hence the name "floating village" - they literally appear to float for part of the year). Water levels drop several meters beginning in December and a sand bank forms during the later part of the season (end of January/February - June). You’ll get to enjoy the beautiful sunset on the lake before we make our way back to Siem Reap town.
